Silk Art Embroidery
A Woman's History of Ornament & Empowerment
Hello, and thank you for visiting my website! My name is Donna Cardwell and I am the author of Silk Art Embroidery, A Woman's History of Ornament & Empowerment, published by Schiffer Publishing. This beautiful art form, sometimes called Society Silk Embroidery by today's collectors, was introduced at the Centennial International Exhibition in 1876 - the first official World's Fair in the United States. It took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from May 10 to November 10, 1876, and celebrated the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
One of the major hallmarks of this hand-stitched embroidery style is realism. Nowhere is this more aptly illustrated than in the photograph below. I was in the midst of a photo shoot next to a pond on a beautiful summer day in my home state of Ohio. Suddenly this beautiful blue-green dragonfly landed on my tablecloth. He was right on one of the pretty white blooms, and he sat there on that flower for about 45 seconds, as if trying to figure out why there was no nectar coming out. The perfect endorsement of this amazing embroidery style!
