This website is devoted to the subject of "Society" silk embroidery, called "Art Embroidery" or "Needlepainting" (my personal favorite) by the Victorian ladies who created it. This fabulous art form was extremely fashionable in the late nineteenth century, and it has become very popular with collectors over the last few years. Hand embroidered on fine linen with shimmering silk floss, the ladies focused mainly on floral designs, mostly roses; other flowers such as violets, pansies, sweet peas, and carnations were also embroidered frequently on tablecloths, napkins, doilies, and centerpieces. The embroidery style is truly stunning, and most of the surviving examples that can be acquired today have lost none of their charm and spectacular color.
